So often you manage to say things I didn't even realize I wanted to say, but I read and think, "Yes, that's it."

Thanks for sharing. Hope your school year is off to a wonderful start.

Today I ran across a photo of Archie playing ball on the playground at the Meyer Center, grinning, actually unaware of the camera for once (he usually asks me not to take his picture). He held that bat out and looked like he could hit the ball clear across the road.

The photo reminded me of your blog, which is awesome, and really should be compiled into a book. Anyway, I love to read what you write, and so here I am.

Even though she's 23 and about to be married, I remember vividly the first kindergarten day for my only child. Mothers always do see their children as both babies and as they are now and I think it gets more bittersweet as time passes. I can completely relate to your apt description of being sucked into a black hole, all those bits of time and me smeared about. But you're right, they're each just another in a collection of moments. It's both hard and good to raise a child, and equally hard and good to let them go. Enjoy your babies while you have them. I think I will try to imagine that all those bits of time and memories are confetti, and it's a parade. If you look up, the shiny bits catch the sun.

To me it was a chilled Cosmo and a delicious piece of chocolate! Archie will own that school in no time flat with his ability to remember everyone's name and him just being his Archie self. He is my sunshine and I am both excited and apprehensive to see him take this next step. I know he's ready but I sure wish I could keep him just like he is for a little longer but time does march on and they grow up in spite of us. Good luck my Archie. You will be great!

This post was like a big glass of wine after a long day...your words always relax and transport me.

I have been thinking a lot about Archie going to school this week as I started back to school. AnnaKate will make the transition in 3 years and I know it will come to fast. I can't wait to hear about all of his adventures. I know that "shy" boy of your will win them over!

Oh my goodness! Now I'm going to have to work twice as hard staying in shape to keep up with these kids. That's OK though because it's all good stuff. How fun for Jack and Kit! I can't wait tto see what they think about it!
Love, NaNa
P.S. Too bad Archie is in school during that time. I think he would give Brandon a run for his money!

Crazy? No! You are and always were a girl who marches to her own beat. I hope that Archie, Kit, and Jack will be like that as well and never give in just to be in the "cool" (for lack of a better word) group. It takes strength, conviction and lots of integrity and kindness to be that way. Truly children learn what they live (the good, the bad, and the ugly) so they can't go wrong being like you. It would be such a better world if people could learn that and live it!

Enjoy the free time. We all need time to regroup and refresh. I love Archie's agenda and his telling of it. It's just so hard when something gets out of order for some reason or another. That Archie though has made great strides in just about everything he does. He is an inspiration to me!

As I watched those twins at their graduation last evening I couldn't help but remember watching you get on the bus for kindergarten. Yep, I understand about the circles!
Next week when Archie graduates from the Meyer Center will seem a lot like coming full circle. I know we have many years of milestones ahead but Archie's graduation will be for me a circle completed. This boy made it and made it BIG! It will be very hard to keep the emotions under control. I AM SO PROUD!

I know that you will hate me saying this but you are an inspiration. I am coming up one my one year anniversary of running. I love what it does...I love how it clears me...empowers me. I feel stronger and more centered than I ever have. I look forward to more years of running and learning.

I miss my workouts. I went into a funk as soon as I stopped. At this point I have to wait until I am no longer growing this little lady. My body is falling apart and I am looking forward to getting it back together again. I loved the feeling of accomplishment I had every morning. It is necessary to do something for yourself, by yourself. Keep going Anne!

Oh Archie, I am so sorry I gave you that nasty bug. You will feel better soon. You handle illnesses better than any of us.
Anne, I totally agree with you. I think it has to be happy to be the end. At least that's what I try to live by. I guess it depends on the individual though.
I think we all feel trapped at times but it passes. Life really needs those twists and turns to make it interesting. Hang in there. Things will be clear again.

Wow Anne! That open heart surgery seems like a hundred years ago but I remember Barky that day like it was yesterday. Don't ever change the way you are. I recall Aunt Pat saying that you always know where you stand with Anne. At times it may come across as a little harsh but there is no one more honest than you. You have grown and matured and learned more than most young women your age. I am so proud of you. There is no one I would trust more than you to have my back. Don't change and keep sharing. It helps others as well as you. Love, Mom

Hi Ann and Portia,
Michael has painted lots of black cats. Some people think they are lucky! Michael is very busy painting for the Kentucky Derby Party fundraiser in Michigan in May. Today he is painting Secretariat with watercolors. He mixed magenta and cadmium yellow for the chestnut coat and he is using cobalt violet for thje shadows. His watercolors glow with color. BloodHorse Publications sent him a big box of old magazines to use as reference. He doesn't copy the photos. He just looks at them to see the colors of the horses, how they look when they move and the colors of the jockey silks. Then he paints his own ideas. He is going to send Blood-Horse Publications an original horse painting as a thank you. Please visit Michael's new website if you would like to see some of his new horse paintings. http://www.artistmichaeljohnson.com

We are looking forward to spring and to planting a vegetable garden in containers on our porches and flowers in the community garden in the backyard. Last year the squirrels and the rabbits ate up all of the vegetables in the garden. Michael and I were the only ones with a harvest!

Happy Spring!

Please visit Michael’s new website if you would like to see some of his new horse paintings. http://www.artistmichaeljohnson.com

We are looking forward to spring and to planting a vegetable garden in containers on our porches and flowers in the community garden in the backyard. Last year the squirrels and the rabbits ate up all of the vegetables in the garden. Michael and I were the only ones with a harvest!

Happy Spring!

That was a very special moment and I'm so glad that I got to share in this one of many "rights of passage." That black cat that crossed your path a few years ago was certainly not a foreboding of something bad because there is not an ounce of anything bad about having Archie in our lives (but you know that.) He has made every single person he encounters better for the experience. That boy makes my heart burst with pride!

Glad for the clarification of the Facebook photo of the Valentine...made it that much sweeter.

Your days are full like mine but seem much more fun. :)

I have not run in 2 weeks...the winter doldrums have hit and I am just not motivated to try and trudge through the ice or sleet. There is always next week and the loom of that Reedy River 10k.

Thanks for the blog...yours is one I truly love to read!

Ugh - I detest all the logo-laden crap Matt brings home for work and Harper treats like it is of the finest gold... but it is nice that they were so happy to see their dad.

I hate it when Matt is away without us, hate it.

This is why I dread taking Will out of his crib. He wakes up and sings to himself now. I am queen of doing the things I said I would never do. I can already see him standing at my bedside everynight. Let me know how/if Archie ever ends up in his bed.

I would sleep with Archie every night if it was possible. There's nothing better than that sweet little voice and that little warm body. I don't mind the elbow in the eye or the back hand across the face. I love the way Archie plays school. He amazes me and I am so proud of him and his great strides and leaps these last few weeks. What a boy!

Thoroughly enjoyed your latest entry -- thank you. You are one of the most special young women I've ever met and I truly miss seeing you every day. You are a wonderful person and the perfect Mom for Archie, Kit and Jack. I never knew the "old Anne", but I love the new one just fine.

What a fabulous post. I relate to it profoundly, and I'm not even sure why.

I think sometimes I write on my blog to say things to myself by saying them out loud to others. To think things through in a way that forces me to believe myself.

Perhaps this isn't what you're saying. But maybe at some point, you need to stop saying these things out loud. You need to say them to YOURSELF, only. And discover that you believe them regardless of what you project to the outside world.

I don't even know if this makes sense. But I I'm really happy for you, and for reading this post. Thank you.

A year ago today Zoey was diagnosed.I looked back at the comment left that day and you wrote"You will get through.I promise. You will."Thank you for that Anne. And for Archie. He represents hope. And for Zoey,3 years younger then Archie,I look to her future with great joy and possibility of what 3 years from now, will hold.I hope yesterday was filled with joy and laughter and it was a beautiful day for your most beautiful boy.

Just beautiful Anne, thank you for this.

I especially love and can relate to "Archie both falls short of my expectations and exceeds them" and "We are tied together by biology, but here and now it’s the spirituality of it all that feels as if it counts the most."

I am so glad Archie had a good birthday. I love his requests! And that cake...yum!

Happy Birthday Archie!

I am so glad that Archie had a wonderful day...just as he wanted it! I love that he wanted cherries on his cake...that precious boy!

John's comment about not worrying so much really hits home...as our kids grow and our love for them grows...their disabilities seem to diminish. I love days when I feel like I can truly handle whatever comes our way.

Archie was in our prayers tonight ....Happy Birthday Archie!

Happy Birthday my sweet Archie! You are my sunshine, my happiness, my good cheer, and everything that is good. I can't imagine what my life would be like without you. You have taught me so many things about myself and about what is important. I love you bigger than the universe. Happy number six!

I look forward to seeing you every day and enjoy your sense of humor and dedication as we endure our workouts. You are a wonderful Mom and should never doubt yourself.

So so good. So so true once again. Every single word. I remember thinking almost six years ago if we would get through all that (the diagnosis, the heart surgery, the leukemia) and if we did at what price. Your post title tells it all! We are richer for the experience in oh so many ways especially like Kit said, "and we have an Archie." Without him none of us would be complete!
Keep that 31 for 21 challenge coming. Your words are so worthwhile.

Oh Anne. You kill me in a wonderful way. I need to remember to bring my tissues to your blog.
You write so beautifully about the every day things.
And I am with you on where did my babies go? It is truly magical, shocking, heart breaking and wonderful to watch them become these little people.

What fun we had and what great memories we made. Don't forget how Archie thought the cemetary was a garden.
The thing is though they'll always be your babies no matter how old they get! Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and enjoy every step. It just gets better!

I love all of the moments you share. Your blog is a wonderful snapshot of their childhood and what it is like to be a part of your family.

I do have to comment on Archie. A few years ago I bought a pink sequined dress and took it into the 4 year old class at the MC. I thought the girls would love the addition to the dress up area. To my surprise, the only kids that wear that dress are the boys. The dress has made it into a few different classes over the years. Every once in awhile I will walk into a class and I get a kick out of the little boy wearing the pink sparkly dress.

I'm happy to see you back and good for Kit!

The day of Harper's second birthday we took her paci's away (The ped. had been after us to do it since she turned one, and I refused!) and that afternoon she flung her self from her crib, so great was her distress. I'm glad Kit's transition has been both self-motivated and less bumpy!

Hey! I've missed you.

Many times I feel like we get in static stretches, where things aren't changing (for good & bad), where the boys seem to stay the same age for a while. Then all of a sudden they'll do a whole lot of growing up all at once. Like they're doing sprints, then resting, then sprinting again.

I think I would have chewed that woman up and spit her out as well. Downs baby indeed!
You are so right...your Grandma was strong, smart and beautiful. I hope if I make it anywhere near ninety that I can be as brave and classy as she was. I know its trite but she is in a better place and she surely has left behind some wonderful grandchildren and some outstanding great-grandchildren. I think she's dancing with the angels for sure!

Enjoy every single second of every single minute of every single day! They do go by so quickly and before you know it you are looking back wondering how it all happened so quickly. But the best part is that you get to relive it through your grandchildren and it just gets better and better.

Today was the first day that I embraced summer and it's relaxing ways. I am allowing AnnaKate to go from the water table straight into the sandbox and then back out again. Whatever makes her happy on these lazy days of summer is what we will do! I spend the other 9 or so months out of the year torn between housework and real-work that it really isn't fair but the summers make up for it all!
Hope to see you soon

I'm back. Thanks Anne...just what I needed to hear. " Great NaNa never ceases to amaze me! She's improving just a little but has made peace with everything that is happening and so have I. I hope I can be as brave and sensible when my time comes like she has been. I am very proud of her.

I read all of your posts. I check the feed to your site everyday just to see what is going on over at your place. I don't always comment, but just know that your life and the lives of your children and the rest of your family is very important to me.

I hope your grandmother continues to improve and she is able to share more of herself with you.

I showed Soph the ad and she said, "There's my Archie." I felt the same way, proud to see his smiling face and wanting to tell everyone around that the precious kid in that picture is our friend Archie. Like Will Ferrell in the movie Elf referring to Santa, "I know him, I know him." What a kid he is and what a mom you are.

That boy "is" closing the gap and it's awesome to watch. I miss the "baby Archie" a lot but the "little boy Archie" is making up for it. I love watching him grow!

Archie is smart. Hands down that's why he can read that book and knows the title of every children's book in your house and mine. I love listening to the three of them interact. It's priceless.
My only question is...what will you do when Jack picks up Corney on Thursday? (one more added to the mix) For those of you not in the know...it's Jack's imaginary baby adoption! LOL

Oh Anne, I think you may have been misleading us just a bit with your claim to be unable to grow anything. Such beautiful wonderful things couldn't grow without someone who knew how to grow them. :)

I have a blog post in my head that was just prompted by this one. At some point in the next day I will write it up over on E's blog.

I can honestly tell you that I have had this experience more than a few times. Unlike you, recently I turned right to a person in the store, went right up in their face up close and personal and said...

Is there a problem? Possibly a reason for your rude remark and the staring? I think the lady could have died, right there, from a full blown heart attack. Sadly I did not come across as an educator, someone who kindly shared a bit of insight into the reasoning behind my child's behavior. Oh no, not I, instead I went right into the defensive mode, heavy on the "b" word.

I'm guessing she had even more to say about her grocery store experience when she left than as she stood stunned, unable to surmise even the teeny tiniest of replies. I felt bad later for being such an uncaring rude person.

I know Archie's "say it" drill and I love it. He's just trying to learn and memorize. I love that he wanted to be on the stage and share his knowlege. About that woman....I've been saying all along that more people need an Archie in their lives. Then they could belong to this special club that we are members of and the world would be such a better place. But then again I wouldn't want someone like that to have an Archie in her life. She doesn't deserve it!

I love how you are such a thinker. Your writing brings up ideas and thoughts that force me to confront things in my own mind or put them the rest. Thanks for sharing your personal thoughts.

We are, in the end, mostly a collection of memories and people we love and loved (and some that we most certainly did NOT). We are so defined by other people, but that's part of being human, right? The enriching and the vulnerable and the sometimes damning part of being human.

I love your running posts. You inspire me. I'd love to be your "online" running buddy. (Although for the next year or so my running will be bumped down in priority a bit.)

Anne,

You have done an amazing job with running. Your hard work and commitment have encouraged me to get going. Your children are going to be very proud of you as they grow. Especially when they are at the same stage of their lives as you are now. I had a hard time figuring out what my goals were after I had Will. I needed something other than the daily grind of motherhood. I am happily following in your footsteps, even if my footsteps are not as fast as yours.

It sounds like you left your group in the dust this morning. I did too, but the guy I work out with is in his 60s and can not run. I am not complaining, because he makes me look good.

I wonder what our children will think of these blogs someday - and whether they'll even be interested at all.

How funny! When you told me about Jack swearing the other day I was relating the story to Patrick and Camille and it made me think of Rosie and the bus incident. Somehow I thought it was you but you're right it was your brother. Then I read your blog and there's the story. What great memories we have and what unique individuals we've had in our families. I hope my grandchildren remember me so fondly and can call up lots of good memories when they are your age. Then I'll know I did something right!

[...] Aunt Rosie wasn’t really my aunt. She was my grandmother’s sister, my father’s aunt, but we cousins called Rosie what our parents did as if she were our aunt, too. Our extended family was large in the way Catholic families were just a generation ago, so it helped to ignore the specifics and instead group people into categories. Not matter who she was in relation to me, Aunt Rosie could pepper a sentence with cuss words like no one’s business. And since she talked a lot, she had occasion to swear often. [...]

Thanks for posting this! Right now my house looks like sh*t! I am embarassed if anyone came over right now! Like I would meet them on the porch and not let them come in! I am just tired from a day, week, ... with the kids. By the time they go to bed I should be cleaning but I have no will power! I am tired as h*ll! It is good to know that Super Anne has off days too! Love the honesty!

I can so relate. I hope the tide has already begun to swing back to relative calm. With three little ones, you are bound to have these thoughts and feelings...we all do. I don't know a mom who hasn't had the "I'M NOT CUT OUT FOR THIS!" thought, or some version of the brainstorming talk (pat yourself on the back for not flopping on the floor, sobbing and snotting and shouting).

When things get so bad that I am actually considering taking a match to the pile of laundry, locking myself in a closet with a keg, or packing my bags and running away...I call the person most likely to make me laugh.

Laughter truly is the best medicine :)...

Oh Anne. Perfect post ! Sums up my night and afternoon. I will spare you the details but i was short of going to the dr. for nerve pills today! I have had all kinds of advice from drinking to taking them to the park to get through no napping 2 and 3 year old boy's but the best is this one from a friend our age who is battling breast and kidney cancer...I am NOT a country music fan but find the song from Darius Rucker "It Won't Be Like This For Long." I has helped me over the past 2 hours !

I relate to the depth of this frustration (and for me, sometimes, even resentment, which I feel HORRIBLE about) SO MUCH. I feel it a lot-- sometimes seemingly all the time.

For me, it's the DUTY of it all. My life feels like 100% duty. All the time. Everyday. Every minute, every second. And it is still not enough.

But it comes and goes with severity. At least it does with me. I go for weeks where I feel like, I am NOT CUT OUT FOR THIS. I feel like a terrible mother, wife, friend, daughter. I feel resentful for how hard I work and how few and far between the good moments are.

And then it will let up. I don't know if it's ME, or conditions change or what. But it does. Temporarily. But I feel better. I feel like I'm DOING THIS. I feel like I'm getting through the rough spots and really enjoying the high points. But I also know it won't last.

And you know, roller coaster make me sick. I get terrible motion sickness. Seems unrelated, but it's not.

great post. I absolutely, positutely love the Archie wants you to come up with a big idea.
I also love that you are so honest. In my mind your house is always spotless, clothes are always folded, and packed away in their places. I think of you every night when I debate leaving the last load of childrens clothes in the dryer. I always thought you were immune. Almost alien like - always being able to fold one last load or mop up a sticky spot as you headed to bed. This post to me, makes what you do, seem more unbelievable. You don't want to do to do these things, you don't enjoy it, you are not alien, you just have all your shit together 99% of the time. Enjoy a couple of weeks off.

Oh, man. If I knew how to fix that, I wouldn't have had such a very similar day. Try wine. Or ice cream. Temporary fixes, for sure, but helpful nonetheless.

I had a tirade of my own last week, because I'm so damn tired of picking up everyone's crap. Literally, and figuratively. I actually have a post of my own in draft mode right now. I'll probably never have time to finish it, though, what with all the picking-up I have to do.

I say, to hell with the laundry! Hope you can, too, and be okay with that.

Oh Anne! Just today, just hours ago as I was trying to explain something to Rourk I stopped in mid-sentence and told him "You've got to do something about your son. I know he means well going on and on, but he's about to get on my last nerve." I couldn't concentrate for listening to him and I was about to explode, too. I can so relate.

Glad you posted about this. We all have days, weeks and months like this but we don't usually talk about it. We should-the idea of knowing that others feel the same way you do just makes things better.

I often have talks like your brainstorming session with my students at school and get some very truthful answers about myself...even though they hurt a little...they do help. I love how you employed the kids to help you. Together as a family you will get through this valley and hopefully not have to call am ambulance!

There's nothing to fix. It's the everyday trials and tribulations of childrearing. Remember that little barrel of red monkeys we had when you were young. You had to hook their arms to get them out of the barrel and you won the game. Well it sounds like the barrel spilled in your house. My advice...link all your arms and pull yourselves up. I love the brainstorming, I love the ideas they had, and most of all I love how fun it all sounds. I know you don't think so but it sounds funny and entertaining and so very normal. Take a deep breath and breathe! It gets better!

Ooh, I'm so glad you posted this. David and I are going, too, but it hadn't occurred to me to keep Eli out of school so that he could go. I'll have to think about that...you're so right about the kids needing to "get it" when they're small.

Cal, however, will still be going to school. I can't deal with Mr. Squirmyman AND pay attention to what's going on.

We will see you there!

Oh how I hate when people pull away or can't make eye contact! If only they knew the Archie I know. I keep telling myself, "one person at a time." We will never educate everyone but we can educate one at a time and each time we succeed that's one more that won't turn away in the future for any child that may be a bit different.
We have all grown so much since Archie came into our lives.

To varied extents, I think that's a notion every parent can attest to. It's lovely and profound, comforting and frightening all at the same time.

And oh how he's changed us!! But of course all for the better. Oh yes having Archie in my life has been one of the best things that ever happened to me. Having said that...it was not fun going through the heart surgery and the leukemia and chemo, oh no, but the bonding time was oh so precious. That boy of yours has given me way more than I'll ever be able to give back. He is who he is and for that I am grateful!

Yes. And we should allow ourselves to be inspired, without it feeling trite. It is human, it is part of imagining your life as different, it is essential to seeing yourself in others. That's what I think.

Love this story.

Funny how that perspective thing happens, huh? Kudos to you for a great race and extra special kudos to that girl who finished the race and gave you that feeling that sometimes doesn't come around that often. Congratulations all around!

You've made me cry Anne.. would you believe me if I told you that today I got into a fight with my brother over this word..and as he put it "the insignificance" of it.. I have been speechless for most of the day searching for a way to reach out to him but I have not been able to.

So instead I sent him a note, told him that I loved him, and asked him to come here and read your post.

Thank you dear friend for such a beautiful post.

p.s Thank you Nana for your encouraging words last week. :)

This is a wonderful message. There are so many reasons, mostly personal to me, why I am sitting here furiously nodding my head right now. I would really like to write it down, to write my own post on this.
